Locavore

Greenmouth Cafe – Allentown, PA

All I want to do is drink green juice, eat raw, vegan food, give my body LIFE, and support my local economy and the planet in the process! #Locavore #EcoObsessed #SaveTheTurtles 🙂

And thanks to places like GREENMOUTH JUICE & CAFE, I CAN!

Over the years, I’ve built so much love and appreciation for not only my own health, but also for the health of this planet we are so lucky to call our home.

Growing up and as a teenager, I was never aware of the impact food would eventually have on my body. I took advantage of the 15 year old, athletic girl metabolism, ate my chicken nuggets and french fries everyday, and stayed “small” from the hours of sports practice I had everyday!

Little did I know back then, although I was “skinny” and my yearly physical said I was healthy, the foods I was eating at the time would later lead to problems I never even knew existed including rapid weight gain, inflammation, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and a diagnosis of borderline pre-diabetes.

From that point on, at the age of 27, my quest to heal became my number one priority. After numerous doctor visits with little to no answers on how I could truly FIX the underlying problems I was facing, I began conducting my own research and studying the benefits of natural healing through foods, oils, and self-care. What I learned and continue to learn has been astonishing.

As time passed, organic, clean, wholesome, raw foods became my saving grace as I started seeing positive changes in my overall health and well-being through consistent consumption. And well, as they say, the rest is history!

To this day, although I create my own healthy foods at home, I will always find joy in scouting out as many local farm markets, cafes, and juice bars as I can! There’s just something about sitting down at a farm table, next to some fresh greenery, and drinking my organic, freshly made green juice that just gives me that sense of joy, calamity, and peace of mind. Anyone else relate?

Having recently moved outside of Allentown, I made it a priority to find a local juice bar that would suit my requirements of vegan, zero-chemical, zero-pesticide, certified organic, AND eco friendly! And thankfully, I stumbled upon this gem right downtown!

GREENMOUTH is truly one for the books and continues to amaze me every time I venture here!

PS… did I mention they make their OWN oat and nut milk?!

PSS…did you know juicing can change your life? I mean TRULY change your life? Juicing has the power to transform your body in more ways than you can imagine. For the full article on Juicing, take a look at my blog post here!

Oh, and before I forget, if you’re coming to GREENMOUTH expecting to eat meat, I have some news for you…

You won’t get meat…. You get something even BETTER!

For all the JUICY details about GREENMOUTH {see what I did there 😉 }, check out my full review below and feel free to leave a comment about your own experience! I’d love to see how much you enjoyed it and hear about some of the must-try’s on your list!

Food Selection

When you walk in, you’re immediately greeted by the friendly staff and pleasantly overwhelmed {in the best way EVER!} with an abundance of wholesome, organic, raw food and drink choices perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks! From juices and juice cleanses, to smoothies, coffees, teas, soups, sandwiches, salads, and desserts, all made from locally grown and organic produce, your healthy, wholesome choices are endless!

You’ll see the huge, decorated menu as soon as you walk in, hanging from the ceiling behind the juice counter. Trust me, you can’t miss it! There’s a lot to choose from, so I recommend asking for the smaller menu {if you’d rather see it up close} which is usually available to grab right at the counter, or checking out the menu on your phone before you arrive!

For a list of everything available, take a look at the options below.

  • Entirely Raw, Non-Pasteurized Cold Pressed Juices
  • Superfood Smoothies
  • Scratch-Made Soups
  • Buddha Rice Bowls
  • Salads, Wraps, Sandwiches, Avocado Toast, & More!

The full menu can also be found HERE!

In terms of your meat substitutes, you’ll have the option of trying out the sunflower seed “meat”, or adding some avocado, smoky coconut “bacon” or sourdough croutons as toppings to your salads or wraps! You do have the option, though, to choose menu options with grass-fed whey protein or yogurt if that’s calling your name. I’ve not tried customizing my food yet, but I’m sure it’s possible. From experience, smoothies are definitely customizable to your liking!

I’ve only been here twice, but I can, without a doubt, say that the Detoxify Salad, Vegan Taco Salad, Farmer’s Market Quinoa Salad, Carmel Maca Frappe (smoothie), Green Glow (juice), Energize (juice), and signature date balls are AMAZING! The portions are perfect, and I’ve even had enough for leftovers when I purchase and consume both food and a smoothie/juice at the same time.

Atmosphere

If you like a mix of greenery, farm-style decor, and a bit of a fun 70’s vibe, you’ve come to the right place!

The cafe itself is pretty small, but there seems to be just the perfect amount of seating every time I’m here. On the left side of the cafe, there are 3 small farm tables lined up with wood benches and metal chairs, along with 2 green tub chairs next to a small wooden coffee table. If you prefer bar-style seating, you can also sit in one of the 6 chairs next to the countertop style bar. There’s a chalkboard and some bucket chalk right in front of you if you choose the bar, so have fun getting creative!

On the right side of the cafe, you have the order counter with various items for sale {desserts, bags of coffee, bracelets}, the water bar {water pitcher with mason jars to pour your own water}, juice refrigerator {all the juices are pre-made with a shelf-life of 3 days}, a small open refrigerator with some pre-made food and drinks, and the juicers/blenders themselves. There’s no closed kitchen, so you’ll hear the smoothie machine going while you’re seated here, but it doesn’t seem like it’s in use very often so the random spurts of noice are definitely tolerable.

There’s always different genres of music playing, so if you’d like to listen to your own, you’d definitely be able to bring a pair of headphones and listen without the cafe music being too overpowering. The music is never overbearing our loud – always enjoyable.

Wifi is available for free, so if you’d like to bring a computer and do some work, I highly recommend! (PSA – I’m sitting in GREENMOUTH as I write this! 🙂 )

I have yet to visit the Easton location, but after talking to one of the awesome girls who works at the Allentown location, I’ve been told that the Easton GREENMOUTH has a very chill, cozy vibe as it’s located on the bottom floor of a house!

Eco-Love

GREENMOUTH offers biodegradable to-go boxes, biodegradable straws, glass mason jars for water, and glass jars for juice. They do offer plastic silverware to-go, along with plastic straws; however, the biodegradable straws ARE readily available for grabs on the counter and always recommended!! #SaveTheFishies!

My smoothie was served with a plastic straw in a plastic cup, so next time I’ll ask to receive the biodegradable straw instead! If you do stay to dine-in, though, I confirmed GREENMOUTH does recycle! The trashcan at the front of the store is just for that – trash, so instead, simply hand them your plastic cup and straw and they’ll recycle it for you! If you choose to grab-and-go, don’t forget to find a local recycle bin or take it home to your own! #PlasticFreeOcean!

If you purchase a juice, you also have the option to return the glass bottle for a $1 refund! I’ve returned them before, but also find them useful for when I’m juicing at home.

Pricing

At first glance, drink prices may seem high if price, not QUALITY, is your only concern. But if you’re reading this, chances are quality is high on your list! 🙂 Rounded up to the nearest dollar, prices include: $9 for a 16oz. smoothie, $11 for a smoothie bowl, $10 for a fresh juice, $9 for a house made nut milk, and anywhere from $2.50-$7.50 for signature coffees, kombucha, fresh squeezed lemonades, and signature tees. However, when you take into consideration the quality of what you’re actually receiving (organic, local, non-pasteurized with as much nutrition in tact as possible), prices seem very fair! Food such as salads, sandwiches/wraps, and desserts are very well priced and do not exceed $11. As stated before, though, portion sizes are perfect and you’ll likely have enough for leftovers if consumed with a smoothie or juice.

Overall Rating

All-in-all, GREENMOUTH is a MUST try! And for me, a must visit as many times as possible! If you’re near the Allentown (or Easton) area and are looking for a quality, delicious, vegan, HEALTHY, eco-friendly place to stop for any meal of the day, GREENMOUTH is perfect and will not disappoint!

I recommend parking in the PPL Center across the street or any of the parking garages on the surrounding block. I have not parked on the road, although spaces with meters are available. The cafe is not located off the main road, so do not get confused by the GPS telling you you’ve arrived but you do not see the building. To get there, you must park and walk down a side sidewalk/street located between two buildings.
